On Tuesday, our U16 girls faced a tough challenge in the form of hockey powerhouse Clifton College in the last sixteen of the Tier 1 Cup. Reaching this stage alone was a remarkable achievement – marking the furthest any of our U16 teams have ever progressed in the competition and a testament to the growing strength of hockey at Sutton Valence.
The team showed exceptional determination and skill throughout the match, sticking to their trademark passing game and moving the ball fluently across the pitch. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to create clear-cut scoring opportunities and found themselves trailing Clifton 1-0 midway through the first half.
In a bold move, with just a few minutes remaining, the goalkeeper was substituted for an extra outfield player, giving SVS an offensive boost. This tactical shift nearly paid off as the girls earned two short corners in quick succession. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert these chances, and the match ended with a 1-0 victory for Clifton College.
The U16s’ journey this season has been nothing short of impressive. They have competed fiercely, even securing victories over schools much larger than Sutton Valence. Their progress, teamwork and commitment have been exemplary.
