Our Year 5 pupils have been busy finding different ways to separate materials. They have used sieves of varied sizes and discovered that filters are all around us and do not always have to be something physical – for example, an internet filter.

But what do you do when filtering simply does not do the job?

After making sticky, sweet sugar and water solutions, we fired up the Bunsen burners and carefully observed how to use them safely. For their super observations, Year 5 were awarded a Bunsen burner certificate which meant they could now evaporate the water from their solutions. What a lovely surprise to find they were left with scrumptious caramel!
