Congratulations to our 1st XV Rugby squad, who are NatWest Under 18 National Vase Finalists. Twickenham here we come!
On Sunday, over 400 people attended the match held at SVS. With excitement, trepidation and nerves tangible in the air, it turned into a thrilling encounter between the two schools and was very much a game of two halves. With various players from both sides playing for national and county teams, the level of skill on the pitch was astounding.
The first half saw Wellington School attack strongly scoring an early try and conversion that had the crowd unsure of what the outcome of the game would be. SVS responded with a penalty by Luke Trigg (Upper Sixth) just before half-time, the score showing 7-3, meaning it was anyone’s game.
It seems the half-time pep-talk worked wonders as SVS came out of the blocks in the second half with a bang. They scored quick-fire tries, including one by Saracen’s Academy prospect Brandon Jackson (Upper Sixth) and a brace excellently secured by Presley Farrance (Upper Sixth), who is also currently representing The Lambs RFC. Luke Trigg secured two conversions from three tries. Wellington School didn’t lie down, as they scored a late consolation try which ended with an SVS victory of 22-14.
SVS will now play Newcastle School for Boys at Twickenham in the England Schools Vase Under 18 Final next Thursday. It is an incredible achievement by the players to reach the Final of such a prestigious, national competition and a testament to the dedication, hard work and numerous hours both the pupils and staff have devoted to their Rugby training. A big thank you must be extended to the Director of Sport, Mr Howell and Strength and Conditioning Coach, Mr Dawling for their unwavering support of these talented players.
