On 20th November the U14 Hockey team had an early start to travel to Redbridge where they competed in the Tier 2 Regional Hockey Finals. The team was to play three games throughout the day. First they faced Bedford Girls School. They had played them only the week before in the semi-finals, losing 2-0. The girls were really keen to perform well in this game, putting pressure on the Bedford team from the first whistle. SVS had over 75 per cent of the possession and showed the opposition a determined front, resulting in a very well-deserved and pleasing 0-0 draw.
The next match was against Bedford Modern School. Although they were unfamiliar opposition, the girls approached the match with great enthusiasm. Again having the majority of the possession, SVS looked the better team. Unfortunately luck was not on our side and, with many shots on goal going just wide or saved by the keeper, we were unable to score. A quick counter attack from Bedford Modern resulted in an unfortunate goal leaving the game 1-0 to Bedford Modern.
Our final game was a local derby, against Cranbrook School. Having beaten them the previous Saturday in a block fixture, the girls were excited to play them again. The team started well and had plenty of opportunities to score, but yet again couldn’t find the back of the goal. Cranbrook, then played the ball around our defence to get two goals. The final score was 2-0 to Cranbrook.
It was a fantastic achievement to reach the Regional Finals and the girls should be very proud of their performances throughout the day.
