The Create a Christmas Tree Decoration Competition has been born!
All the children at SVPS are encouraged to use their Art and Design Technology skills to sparkle with creativity and dazzle with originality to create a Christmas Tree decoration. Using methods and materials of their choice, they can embrace one of the ancient traditions of Christmas and create a decoration to adorn our SVPS Christmas trees.
Many legends are linked to the origins of Christmas tree decorations. A story is told that one night before Christmas, a 16th-century German preacher, was walking through the forest and looked up to see the stars shining through the tree branches. It was so beautiful, that he went home and told his children that it reminded him of Jesus, who left the stars of heaven to come to earth at Christmas. Hence, Christmas trees decorated with candles and nowadays, strings of fairy lights.
Early Christmas trees were also decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and gold covered apples, as well as roses cut out of coloured paper. Then glass makers made special small ornaments similar to some of the decorations used today. Originally, tinsel was made from thin strips of beaten silver or… the Christmas spider!
This folk tale involves a poor family who couldn’t afford to decorate a tree for Christmas. However, when the children were asleep on Christmas Eve, a spider covers the tree in cobwebs. Magically, on Christmas morning, the cobwebs are turned into silver and gold strands which decorated the tree like tinsel!
So, let the magic of creativity shine and hand your Christmas Tree decoration into Mrs Savage by Monday 30th November.
