Sutton Valence Preparatory School was one of the 125 schools chosen to participate in ART UK Masterpieces in Schools, The Sculpture Project. They worked with Maidstone Museum to bring art out of galleries and into schools so that a wider number of children were given the opportunity to appreciate famous artworks. We were privileged to host two sculptures during our Leadership Week at the end of the Summer Term. The Male and Female Spirit Lover Figures from Baule, Ivory Coast, West Africa took pride of place for the day and the whole School took part in activities that celebrated the culture, design and history of the wooden figures.
At the end of the day, all the amazing artwork created was hung in the Bates Hall; our very own gallery that had children and parents appreciating the landscape collages, magnificent masks, printing and patterns, clay sculptures and mood boards that the figures from Baule inspired. It was truly an awesome day! As a result of the children’s learning and creativity, the Maidstone Museum awarded each child that took part, an Arts Award. Arts Award Discover is an introductory award certificated by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England, and is focused on supporting young people to unlock their creative potential. To achieve an Arts Award Discover, children and young people produce evidence for their experiences of taking part in arts activities, researching artists or craftspeople and their work and sharing their art discoveries – all criteria that the SVPS children achieved during their Sculpture Day. Well done SVPS artists, we are all very proud of you! Let your Arts Award Discovery certificate take pride of place at home to remind you of your creative potential and awesome art!
