Our Sixth Form Art students recently headed to Shoreditch, East London for a guided street tour by leading UK street art critic and journalist, Dave Stuart. Elizabeth Goodwin (Lower Sixth) reports on the day below:
“On Friday 26th November, the Sixth Form Art students, including myself, were lucky enough to be led on a street art tour, guided by a leading UK street art critic and journalist, Dave Stuart, around the streets of Shoreditch in East London. We saw the work of multiple artists with varied techniques and styles including artists like Banksy who works with stencils, Wordsmith that prints on stickers and Jimmy C who uses spray paint.
Whilst all the pieces were unique with different aspects you could learn from, my favourite piece was the word ‘SCARY’ painted in bold capitals under a bridge. The bright red background was really eye-catching and had a great impact on brightening up the surroundings. The paintings, part of the ‘Connectivity Series’ shows how spray paints could be used to create intricate detail with vibrant colours and contrasts, which I am now intrigued to experiment with in my own work back in the Art department”.
