On Friday 18th October Mr Metcalfe and Ms Austen accompanied 15 Fourth and Fifth form students on a GCSE Economics trip to Jersey. Below is a report on the trip from one of the students who went.
The trip started with an early wake up – 2:30 am! Having a great Itinerary planned by Mr Metcalfe we were all raring to go. The first thing on the plan was a talk with Jersey finance, this talk gave us an insight in too what really goes on when working in Finance and what jobs are available in different sectors. In the afternoon we headed back to the hotel in time for the Flowrider (an artificial wave machine for body boarding and surfing). This activity required lots of balance and coordination to not fall off the board!
On Saturday morning the apprentice task was buying items for as low price as possible, my team managed to get a few items for free and had very low prices on most of our items which lead us to win and take home a small trophy on the last day. Our second activity off the day, we went to a bakery. We learnt about how the shop started, its rules, like not throwing out food and how their croissants only have 4-6 ingredients in unlike a supermarket one which has around 22.
On day three we had a trip to two jersey Museums one showcasing all of Jerseys history and it’s key features and how they were started up like finance. The second museum was visiting the Jersey tunnels with was all about the German occupation during the war.
On our last day we went to SCOOP, a sustainable cooperative with a farm shop in which we learned about what they do and how it makes money, after that we had to make our own lunch which was tagliatelle and stuffed pasta. But before this we had to pick our own ingredients from one of the farms itself. I found the pasta very good particularly liking the green stuffed pasta. This was a good end to the trip. With our stomachs full and bags packed we left SCOOP for the airport where we would leave this great trip behind. Overall the trip was great, giving us a great overview on economics in action and Jersey’s main part of the Economy.
