European Day of Languages

30 Sep 24

Yesterday, nine Senior School students visited the Prep School to give presentations on various countries, including Ukraine, Germany, France, Spain, Croatia and Italy, in celebration of European Day of Languages.

Many of the students presenting spoke about their home countries. They worked in pairs, engaging the younger year groups by teaching them letters from different alphabets and sharing insights about their cultures. The younger students were rewarded with stickers featuring European countries’ flags when they answered quiz questions correctly at the end of each presentation. The engagement from the younger students was impressive, fostering a strong sense of community.

Max, from Ukraine, said, “It was fascinating to meet the pupils in Year 3. I could see that spark in their eyes and their genuine interest in the topic.”
Leon, who is German/Italian, added, “The Year 4 pupils loved learning about Italy, particularly the Italian football team! I loved meeting them and think teaching would be a fun career for me!”
Gala, from Croatia, shared, “I was surprised that they knew so much about Croatia, and some of the pupils had even been on holiday there!”

We were also in for a treat when Mr Strydom said grace in his native language, Afrikaans.

After the presentations, the students and staff enjoyed a Greek and Spanish themed lunch together, where the Senior School students continued to engage with the younger pupils, answering further questions about their presentations.

It was a rewarding visit, and we look forward to future opportunities to collaborate and celebrate international festivals throughout the year.
