This week, Reception children visited the Art Room and created rainbow magic! Inspired by Daniel Mercadante’s Rainbow Road photographs – he paints rainbow pathways using light and long exposure to create magical landscapes. The children used oil pastels to draw an imaginary, rainbow-filled landscape. Then they painted with watercolours and developed the wax resist method to create magic.
Adding some cross-curricular scientific creativity, in the form of “oil and water do not mix”, the children were enthralled by the results. Stroking the paper with the paintbrush and allowing the watercolours to float across the surface, the children excitedly took creative risks and confidently created colourful compositions that radiated rainbow magic.
