Emilia S (Year 6) talks in her prefect piece below about her love for Netball and gives us some fun facts about the sport.
My name is Emilia and I am extremely passionate about Netball and my strongest position is Goal Attack. The game can be played in teams of seven or five but when you are playing teams of five, the Wing Attack and Wing Defence positions are not included. You may wonder why it was named Netball? Well, an American teacher introduced the game which included basketball rules (excluding bouncing of the ball) and an outdoor court but basketball hoops were replaced with netted hoops and the backboard was taken away.
Netball was first played in England 1985 at Madame Ostenburg’s College. In the first half of the 20th Century, Netball’s popularity continued to grow, with the game being played in many British commonwealth countries.
I really enjoy playing Netball and watching the games on TV. My favourite player is Helen Housby, the England Goal Attack player. I really like her because when I watch her play, it helps me learn how I can improve and inspires me to keep trying things that are hard.
