For National Poetry Day, Year 5 explored the wonders of haiku poetry, linking it to this term’s text, Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. Haiku is a style of Japanese poetry, written to a specific format: the first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables and the third line, again, has five syllables. Traditionally, a haiku is written on the theme of nature or the seasons; we wrote our haikus to create images of the ocean and the sun, a common theme running throughout Kensuke’s Kingdom. Have a go yourself and show Mrs Dallamore your creative thinking!
