Year 5 have been developing their drawing skills with the help of robots. Focusing on tonal variation, they shaded their robot to create the effect that it was made from shiny metal. They had to avoid the human error of automatically shading everything a dull grey, consequently leaving no pure white areas to reflect the light. Furthermore, Year 5 had to use tonal variation to change their 2D robot into a 3D form. This meant that they had to think about where the darker, shadowed areas would be on the shapes that comprised their robot.

Drawing on their previous skills of shading to create the illusion of 3D, the children transformed their linear flat robot into a realistic robot. Using their pencils, drawing techniques and creativity, they reinforced their tonal skills by creating their own realistic robots!
