In Art, Year 4 has been focusing on the human figure. Our amazing bodies have intrigued artists for many centuries and our pupils were just as curious.
With the support of a wooden manikin, Year 4 broke the human figure into simple geometric shapes, ensuring that proportions were accurately drawn.
Next, they were ready to be introduced to Alberto Giacometti, an artist who is famous for his bronze sculptures of human bodies in particular positions. Applying their newly acquired figure-drawing skills, the pupils confidently created gesture drawings.
Since the objective is to establish gesture and movement, it encourages drawing in a ‘scribbly’ style – a technique that was really enjoyed. Gesture drawings are very useful for creating preliminary sketches, which is just what Year 4 are using to plan their Giacometti inspired sculptures of the human body.
