Thursday saw two teams participating in Cricket tournaments. The U15 Girls’ team competed in the Kent Cricket U15 Girls’ Schools’ Hardball Finals and the U13A Boys’ team played in a tournament at Dulwich Prep, Cranbrook.

Kent Cricket U15 Girl’s School’s Hardball Finals

At last, the sun was out, and it was the perfect day to play Cricket. The Semi-Final saw SVS play Bromley High. The girls had previously played Bromley High in the National Schools Cup and won. SVS batted first and losing a wicket second ball and then again in the third over, the girls started to panic. Caitlin Calverley (Third Form) and Evie Smith (Second Form) held the team together with a solid partnership with lots of good running between the wickets to accelerate the run rate. A very impressive 30 runs for Caitlin saw her retire and SVS finished their innings on 87 for 5 off 15 overs.

Bromley High started their batting innings positively but some solid bowling and fielding from the SVS girls saw them keep the runs down. Some excellent bowling from Elizabeth Myers (Third Form) saw her pick up two wickets, plus some outstanding wicket keeping from Evie saw Bromley High lose wickets quickly and finished their innings on 73 for 5 in the 15 overs. A great win for SVS by 14 runs.

Having won the Semi-Finals, SVS were to play Kent College, Canterbury in the Final. Having played each other several times, it was becoming quite a rivalry. Kent College batted first and scored an impressive 108 runs for 2 wickets with one of their batters retiring after reaching 30 runs. SVS showed great determination, both with the ball and in the field. Some excellent keeping again from Evie saw her claim a caught behind off Fourth Form student Olivia Chadwick’s bowling. Another piece of great fielding from Elizabeth Penfold (Third Form) saw her claim a runout.

SVS started their batting innings positively with some excellent hitting from Katy Barr (Fourth Form) and Darcy Hanna (Third Form). SVS were up on the run rate after three overs and in a positive place. A change of bowler from Kent College saw the SVS girls struggle and began to lose wickets. Lizzie batted well to keep the runs coming for SVS but there was too much to be done to reach the total of Kent College. SVS finished their innings on 56 all out in the 14th over.

It was an outstanding day of Cricket all around and all the girls should be extremely proud of their performances.

U13 Cricket tournament at Dulwich Prep, Cranbrook

On Thursday, following a week of heavy rain, the U13A Boys’ Cricket team were fortunate enough to be involved in a Cricket tournament at Dulwich Prep, Cranbrook.

It was a 10-over tournament, with the five bowlers not allowed to bat in the top six. This brought a different tactical element to the games, with the boys batting higher up the order than they are perhaps used to.

In the first group game against Claremont, SVS won by 14 runs, with Harry Demarne (Second Form) being the top scorer with 14 and Montgomery Tunnicliffe (First Form) and Benjamin Wilding (Second Form) taking two wickets each. The final score – Claremont 52-9, SVS 66-6. SVS won by 14 runs.

In the second group game, SVS faced a strong Hilden Grange side who set a target of 44 runs, despite Benjamin claiming another three wickets. SVS chased the total down with three overs to spare, thanks to an excellent 25 not out from Jacob Pearton (Second Form). The final score – Hilden Grange 44-8, SVS 45-3. SVS won by seven wickets.

SVS then faced Wellesley House in the Semi-Finals and despite outstanding bowling from Luca Callander (Second Form) with three wickets, had to chase 46. Due mainly to the 18 extras that were gifted to Wellesley, SVS quickly found themselves five wickets down, but Joshua Slaughter (Second Form) and Harry dug in to see SVS to victory. The final score – Wellesley House 46-7, SVS 48-5. SVS won by five wickets.

The final was a repeat of a recent block fixture, with hosts Dulwich Prep (victors by six runs in April) the opponents. SVS batted first, with outstanding knocks from Harry (17 not out) and Jacob (28 retired) overshadowing the four run-outs and setting Dulwich Prep a total of 68 runs to beat. Thanks to some magnificent bowling, Dulwich Prep struggled to get going and fell 25 runs short of victory. Jack Dyas (First Form) was the pick of the bowlers, with three wickets. The best part of the game was SVS bowling just three extras, our lowest extras count by eight runs. The final score – SVS 68-4, DPC 44-8. SVS won by 24 runs.

An excellent victory, over a typically strong and competitive Dulwich side.Well done to all boys involved!
