The Historical Society Great Debate took place virtually on Monday and Sixth Form students from across Kent debated the following question, “The 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II has seen global and widespread changes including in societal infrastructure, industry, rural life and the environment. Which changes of the last 70 years have affected your local area the most?”.
Struben Savage (Lower Sixth) argued that retaining the grammar school system brought opportunities to Kent that are unique to this area (a tough sell!) and Thomas Dolan (Lower Sixth) argued that the development of the aviation industry and the growth of airports across Kent have changed and developed Kent beyond recognition since the 1950s.
Thomas was the winner of the regional heat and will now go on to the national competition held at Windsor Castle in March. SVS has participated three times previously and won the regional three times.
Let’s hope it is our year to win the national debate.
Good luck Thomas!
